The United Nations pioneered peacekeeping in 1948 with the establishment of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East.  There have been 68 peacekeeping operations worldwide since then.  Today there are currently 16 UN peacekeeping operations deployed on four continents. 


Ophelia’s specialty is Africa.  Of the 16 UN peacekeeping operations, nine are in Africa:

• Western Sahara – Since April 1991

• Liberia – Since September 2003

• Cote d’Ivoire – Since April 2004

• Darfur – Since July 2007

• Democratic Republic Congo – Since July 2010

• Abyei, Sudan – Since June 2011

• South Sudan – Since July 2011

• Mali – Since April 2013

• Central African Republic – April 2014
